What’s happenin cryptophiles!
Do you live in or happen to be visiting Austin TX this 4th of July (a week from today?) If so, then I urge you to checkout some of the efforts of our friends from Satoshiatx.com! This Austin Bitcoin Social Meetup group is planning to begin having weekly community gatherings where local bitcoin friendly vendors will sell wares, local crypto-philes will have a safe place to trade, and more importantly, socialize! I find that talking to people in real life about bitcoin is more engaging (for me at least), especially in a meetup group setting. (vs simply being in a chatroom or on a forum thread where anonymity causes many to turn the *trolling* filter off)
Daniel Caditz states, “Our goal is to create a safe place in order to cultivate the Bitcoin community here in Austin.” If you ask me, I think that there are other distinctive advantages at play here:
1) Students, Children, the Unemployed, and otherwise: you could contribute to this ‘local bitcoin economy’ right now! Acting as ‘merchants’, simply offer a good or service.
Students: you could offer something like tutoring lessons
Children: Macaroni art, finger paintings, drawings and other artwork for sale $5-10 bucks a pop.
Unemployed : Do you have an adult equivalent of a valuable skill above like metalworking, or landscaping, or auto repair??? – DO IT! Offer the service for bitcoin! Set up a standard rate and offer to give discounts if purchasing in BTC!
Otherwise : Offer whatever your otherwise could be that is valuable! – EZ way (put the stuff you want to sale, up for sale, on craigslist. Offer to sell it for a discount if purchased in BTC, just like above)
2) They are setting the model for what could become a great template to begin these localized markets. Its one thing to have a group of enthusiasts that come around every few weeks to talk about all things BTC, but its another beast altogether to have a group of vendors that have an offering of wares that can be purchased for BTC in a person to person exchange (I’m used to seeing BTC transactions happen online or often between addresses and storage wallets, or from trading it for fiat, but trading for actual goods and services, not so much)
My point to all this: If you’re in Austin, come checkout Satoshi Square in Austin this 4th of July while you’re at it! (the link here takes you to an eventbrite page where you MUST REGISTER if you are interested in receiving free bitcoin.)
