Coinality Review

Good Day Mates,

It’s definitely been a minute since I’ve spoken out via post format via the internets, but hey, who cares.  If you’re really compelled to know, I’ve been Un-Shadowbanned and shall resume my moderating activities on Reddit.  Its also great news to know that the HK Ponzi Scheme Mycoin only shows losses of 8 Million and Not 397 Million USD, but that is another story altogether.

So, I’ve come here today to discuss trying out and interacting with the website, Coinality.  Coinality, is a bitcoin job posting site where individuals can post or apply for various gigs available for payment in bitcoin. I’ve seen honeybadgr.com and think of them or even my own ../jobs board that I offer which crawls craigslist as well.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have heard of Coinality before.  I just never came around to really trying it out and giving them an objective review.  This is because at the time I learned about Coinality, I had actually been mining BTC as a full time endeavor using Antminer S1s along with a slew of other devices  here and there.  Some of which are now converted into BlockErupter Lapel Pins and worn as fashion Pieces.  (Makes a great pledge reward for a college or high school bitcoin meetup group).  So, while the mining hardware has been turned off, the show must go on, hence Coinality.  I actually found out about a logo design contest opportunity for a product dubbed “Eplug”  which touts the ability of providing p2p mesh network functionality within the application of a light switch or outlet socket.

Their contest, listed here, is an opportunity to earn 1 Bitcoin (approximately $220 USD) if your logo is picked for the company.  While I do not have a huge amount of expertise with creative design, I do have a few websites under my belt and know my way around GIYF(ing) things so I’m off to download Inkscape!

After a few hours of playing around, I’ve got my bearings together and have a basic SVG color logo ready to submit.  Wish me luck!

I’ve submitted my sample logo to Ken of ePlug and I’m now checking out other features of Coinality.  Off the bat, I see that they offer this cool widget here that gives us stats on their Job placements vs Applicants.  As of the time of writing this, my widget shows 160 Job opportunities to a whopping 489 Resumes – In laymen’s terms that means only 32% of the job seekers here can potentially find a job to fill (by idealistic terms)  The reciprocal value maybe makes more sense for you:  There are just over 3 applicants per job offered.  That doesn’t take into consideration: the market rates of the jobs available vs the actual offer posted (the market often offers job opportunities well below market value for the work required).

Now about 25 minutes later since the paragraph above, I’ve had an opportunity to peer through some of the various resumes posted.  Strange right, I’m looking at your personal information if you’ve posted it here because it is freely available on the internet – my reason for choosing to opt away from job placement websites like monster.com or indeed was due to receiving rampant spam (this is now about 10 years ago since using those sites!)  Anyhow, I must say that there is definitely talent to be hired here!  I’m almost curious if competitor honeybadgr is poaching potential applicants?  So far, I’ve found SEVERAL competent sounding developers, a few different finance guys and even a multi-decades accomplished writer!  Being that its a small community I’m also starting to recognize some photos from other profiles on different social media networks too.

One big issue I’m seeing out the gate is that everyone is either depicting an hourly rate in USD or perhaps and annual rate in USD rather than the desired amount in BTC.  I know that there is no way in my right mind that I would pay a virtual assistant 45 BTC unless (its 2011) or that’s an annual rate for full time or perhaps 3/4 time work, let alone 60,000 BTC!

The other potential issue I see here is that its basically  wasted effort/pitfall to potential identity thieves/hackers.    While the site sees some action from resume uploads here and there daily, it does not see much if ANY love from potential hiring managers.  I did a “for funsies” experiment utilizing one resume, this particular resume was posted sometime last year and showed a ballpark of 230 days since being posted onto coinality.  Now, Coinality has this nifty feature that shows me how many views an applicant has received on their page so I CAN TELL IF YOU’RE GETTING ATTENTION FROM HIRING MANAGERS OR NOT!  With this specific profile, I can see that they have garnered approximately 154 page-views since creation which registers as a 2 out of 3 chance of his profile being viewed ONE TIME on any given day.

The Job offers site of Coinality is interesting:  Its an aggregator of Odesk, Elance, Craigslist, and private submissions by companies.  It also appears that they have a premium talent scouting company in the works called coinality.io that aims to charge a 10% premium for their top 1% talent most likely.  But back to the jobs!  I see a variety of Customer Support, Technical Development, Middle Party API development, User Experience/Frontend, and Content writer positions available to job seekers.  Unfortunately, 75% of the jobs I found had required me to view the specific details/apply on an external site such as Odesk or Elance.  While there are only 160 job opportunities posted as of this writing, I DO see an assortment of Skill proficiency levels available for potential job seekers.  While it is favored technical expertise heavily (roughly 4 out of 5 jobs listed would demand a high 5 to mid 6 figure income in a top 15 US city. ), there were an assortment of entry level positions and piece rate work jobs available for writers, journalists, graphic artists (I found a few different options to design other logos beyond the one submitted above, very refreshing!), and phone support.  However if you happen to be underhanded on the technical acumen, then you probably shouldn’t hold your breath – there are far more opportunities for you through Craigslist Gigs, perhaps Fiverr, or even through the ‘ol job market boards on Bitcointalk or Reddit.

Till Next time (And happy Job Hunting Yo!)
